We finished this Baritone Healer for @dtshreds one year ago today. I took photos of the last four instruments we made in Suite 059 soon after this and will share those over the next couple of days leading up to Open Studios this weekend @eastworks_community

Dan has graciously lent us this one to show off in the shop so please come by and give it a strum on November 2nd and 3rd from 10-5.

Dan picked the top color to match a really cool vintage alarm clock he’s had for years. The body and neck are mahogany finished with satin waterbase varnish and bound with ivoroid. The fretboard and headcap are Macassar ebony. We deliberated for weeks over a pickguard material and I think he made a fantastic choice with this wild pink nebula swirl.

The scale length is 28” for B-b tuning. The Firebird pickups were made by Ohad @barbibayguitars and the wiring is Volume, Tone, and 3 way blade switch, nice and easy.
Tuners are locking SD91 Gotoh and bridge and vibrato are by @masterybridge

We’re very excited to be participating in this years Open Studios in Eastworks, our shop’s home since 2011. This will be the official unveiling of our new space in Suite 058 too so we hope you can make it over to check out what we’ve been up to this year.

The last day of the Fretboard Summit on 8/25 was more of the same... total awesomeness. We pushed the on-board distortion circuit in the Growler on everyone we could ( a Blue Clipper style made by @stromermutroniks ) which inspired the many smiling faces we have here via Rich @richhinman , Gabby @losch_guitars Ben @letterpress_mechanic and @andycambria of @themusicemporium . We’ve been working with Andy and Adam for 3 years now and it was super nice to see them out in Chicago.

The Healer bass and long scale Healer also got some attention from the great pedal makers @djlavalamp and @carolinegco and some new friends, Bill B. and Kirk S. In a fun turn of events, Bill B. picked up a pre-owned Healy Tele a few years back that I’d made in 2015, so it was great to cross paths with him out here. That guitar was the first one I’d made that had a pickguard that supported the 2 pickups, much like what I do on half the Growlers today.

Last but not least I want to give a huge shoutout to my friend Ryan Welcome @argonautguitars who helped out at the show all weekend. Between shuttling me and Paul @mcevoyguitars to dinner, packing up on Sunday and getting things to UPS and FedEx on Monday, and manning the table, I knew the guitars and guests were always in good hands with him. Make sure to give him a follow as the festival seems to have gotten him all riled up. He’s got some great ideas brewing for next year and is making awesome hardware and pedals now too. Thanks Ryan and Sarah for the Sunday hospitality, all my the other amazing makers at the show (sorry I didn’t get more photos of every one of you!) , @jasonverlinde and all the @fretboardsummit @fretboardjournal and @oldtownschool staff that made this event happen.

Nearly 2 weeks later…Day 2 at the @fretboardsummit was packed with awesome visitors. @nschillace came by with an acoustic that I’d made back in 2012 before his workshop on John Fahey that afternoon. Some Chicago luminaries dropped by too: Doug @douglasmccombs from Tortoise, Andrew @yrknives4u and @mikel_patrick_avery all checked out the long scale Healer. Mikel was playing drums with Rich Hinman and Adam Levy at the show that night and also makes amazing effects pedals like the one knob Fuzz in the photo.

I don’t have any photos of the guitar repair panel but @newyorkguitarrepair took us deep into what makes each of us tick and why we stick with this work after so many years. What an honor to have been in that conversation with @tj_thompson_guitars @folkway_repairs @tyler_ecg @gitwik (Joe Glaser).

Much love to Jason @fretboardjournal and Dawn and everyone @oldtownshool for another great day filled with great conversation and camaraderie. The amazing poster collection throughout the halls of Old Town School was really special, and Saturday night ended on a very high note with the music in the last video.

I’m excited to announce that I’ll be exhibiting guitars at the @fretboardsummit in Chicago, IL next week. The show runs from Friday 8/23 through Sunday 8/25 with over 50 exhibitors/makers in the Luthiers Showcase and the weekend is stacked with workshops and performances too. I personally can’t wait to see @blakemills, the duo of @richhinman and @adamlevyguitar and the @jhspedals Science Fair. I’ve been a reader of @fretboardjournal since its inception, inspired by all the luthiers and guitars that have filled its pages, and I can’t wait to take part in this unique event. I’ll be participating in a guitar repair roundtable with @newyorkguitarrepair (and many more) on Saturday too. I’ll have my personal long scale Healer, a client’s brand new small body Healer, and a Growler made especially for the show. Thank You Black Francis! My former @eastworks_ma neighbor and Pixies front man Frank Black, aka Charles Thompson, is one of a kind. This is the second Healer we’ve built for him but the first with 6 strings. Much like the first it also has one of his wisdom teeth in it.

A couple of years ago Charles brought in a massive pile of wood to his studio that was freshly cut maple from his property. We picked out a few choice pieces worthy of guitar making and rough cut it to air dry. Last year he brought us another tooth, so we had start building!

The neck and top are both maple from his backyard in Amherst. The body core is alder, a classic instrument wood that is always nice to work with. Instead of putting the tooth in the headstock like last time, I made a cavity in the back so you could peer inside to see the tooth. A little more stealth, and more for Charles than anyone else.

His main guitar in the Pixies is an early 50’s tele and he always uses the bridge pickup. We wanted the Healer to have a humcancelling bridge pickup that would be quiet in the studio. We also put in a more vibrant neck pickup that he might even turn on every now and again. Ohad made this set, an alnico magnet P-90 style pickup in the neck with a brass baseplate. It has a lot more harmonic content and a bit of compression when hit harder. The bridge pickup is a stacked coil and can be run in series or parallel with a push pull on the tone pot. Series is the main “down” position. It’s got a nice bite but is also really clear.

Ohad and I brought the new Healer over to him in the studio last week and had a blast handing it over. He showed us around and introduced us to the band (!!!), we had coffee, and tried not to be too giddy while he took the Healer for a spin. Quite a day!
